Why aren't Hispanics/Latinos classified as a racial group in the US Census?

There's a lot of racism against latinos. Haven't you been out in the world or what? You should go out and take a look. The discrimination is very hard on them. You haven't seen either legal ir illegal immigrants, what they have to go trough. It's really hard for them.

Last time I checked they were. But here's what I was told,excuse me if I'm wrong: Hispanic: Culture of Spanish speaking people. Latino: Latin Americans. Hispanic/Latino People: range from black, Native [enter LA country], white, asian, and everything in between. They probably are not considered a racial group because unlikes Whites, Blacks, and Asians there isn't one "look"/race to them (meaning, while other races are diverse, white doesn't reach a broad spectrum of other races). Go to Costa Rica/ Brazil/ Chile/Argentina, I'm sure you'll pass by tons of Black and White looking Latinos. They aren't racial homogenous(sp) so it's hard to put them in that category.

From reading the comment threads here I understand what AWC is asking. He is asking why Hispanic/Latinos are not considered "racial groups" rather than "ethnic groups." I just commented and shall copy and paste that comment as my answer: A lot of us are considered ethnic groups despite meeting the full criteria for race. My people, for example, have a distinct and unique Y chromosome only found in us and we are on the way to isolating our mitochondrial DNA. That was as of about a year ago: the marker on our mitochondrial DNA might have been found by now. . We meet every criteria for "race." But, due to narrow classifications, we are stuck under "ethnic group." . Same for Latinos and many others.

for the same reason the french are not defined as a racial group or nigerians , etc. There is no DNA requirement to be Latino/Hispanic. There are hispanic people with more african ancestry than most African Americans. There are Hispanics who are aryan enough to make Hitler proud. The only common element is that they or some of their ancestors hail fro ma place that was once colonized by Spain. are from some country
