  • Bernadette's visions at Lourdes occured in 1858. The Catholic Church approved them in 1862 which is rather fast for the workings of the Church. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Lourdes#The_Catholic_Church.27s_position Reputed Marian apparitions are examined by the Church. The apparitions found false are declared false. A Marian apparition, if deemed genuine by Church authority, is treated as private revelation that may emphasize some facet of the received public revelation for a specific purpose, but it can never add anything new to the deposit of faith. The Church will confirm an apparition as worthy of belief, but belief is never required by divine faith. This belief is optional. Here is the Catholic Church's official document on Apparition Discernment (1978): http://www.catholicculture.org/culture/library/view.cfm?id=7817&repos=1&subrepos=0&searchid=317436 With love in Christ.
