I think it's a false coming closer together when speaking (as on a phone) and especially speaking face to face (as compared to web chat) are the dominant means of communicating. I really think some young people don't know what they're missing by not REALLY talking to others, by not living a real life. (Since you asked...)

With the understanding of how much communication we lose (misinterpretations with lack of: tone of voice, facial expressions, some eye contact, energy/aura, etc.) when we text, email and even on the phone at times, I think we are growing apart and I see more and more superficial friendships/relationships that are easily disposed of if something goes wrong.

Depends on what you mean by closer. So much of communication relies on body language and voice tones, and this is lost in a text or e-mail. Indeed, we see ever expanding and far-reaching spheres of personal influence coupled with underdeveloped social/interpersonal skills. So, to answer your question, both!
