The traditional idea of avatar has to do with the physical representation of a god/spirit. A god's/spirit's avatar was their physical representation when they wanted to appear to/interact with the physical world. That meaning has been changed slightly to have a visual representation of yourself. So the picture is your physical representation of your internet spirit.. so to speak.

If ava means 'down', how does 'Ava Maria' fit in? Anyway, from one of the lart replies, I would think the word 'aura' might be synonimous.

Actually, it's more like an earthly manifestation of a spiritual being, and it's not "Ava Maria" but rather "Ave Maria", and "Ave" is the Latin for "Hail." It's another etymological root altogether.
