I wish I had taken pictures of my daughter's room before we went in with a shovel and cleaned it up. A picture would have been worth 1000 words. Suffice it to say that I have no idea how she ever found anything or slept. Everything was covered in clothing, and "girl stuff" -- floor, bed and walls.

In a messy room, nothing has a place and therefore nothing can be in its place. Every flat surface is cluttered with a mix of items, from unopened mail to empty soda cans to unmatched socks to pens. Floor space is piled with clothes to be laundered, luggage and framed photos that you have no wall space for.
