I think Holland is pretty gay friendly - but in a normal and accepting way - it seems to make no difference whether one is gay or straight, which is how, I suppose, it ought to be. I was in Amsterdam in 1998 when the Gay Games were on - it was an amazing experience - I went to the Pride Canal parade, and watched the opening ceremony on the telly. At the Parade, there were all kinds of people there ( I am not gay) - gay, straight etc. Can you imagine many countries where the official opening ceremony of the gay games would be televised on a mainstream terrestrial channel (rather than on a niche channel?) And at which the head of state (in this case, the Queen - and I mean the monarch, not one of the many other queens who were at the parade) gave a welcoming speech? For those few days, Amsterdam was a gay hot bed, but nobody batted an eye! There were people there from all over the world, and it struck me that for a lot of them, this may have been the first time they were able to openly walk around hand in hand, amd going out for dinner together without worrying. (I must say that gay acceptance has moved forward very swiftly in the past few years, but this was still at a time when it appeared to be a little frowned upon in public in most countries). Anyway - it changed my opinion of gay people a lot - and opened my eyes to a new acceptance, as I experienced that whether straight or gay (or other options in between) everyone has the right to walk hand in hand down the street!
