  • It certainly seems quite common in the US, at least more common than here in the UK. It is legal in the UK though, but I think there are tighter restrictions than in the US.
  • ive heard of people taking their children out of school because of bullying in the uk but i dont think its legal. i seem to remember something on tv where the mum said she would rather be prosecuted than send her child back to school
  • It is certainly legal here in the UK, but not very common as far as I am aware, at least as a first resort. Those who are home-schooled in England are nearly always those who keep getting excluded from schools and those who are prioritising something other than their education, such as a sporting career, and so fit their schooling around that to give flexibility. It does seem to be a lot more common in other countries though, I agree... I personally don't know anybody home-schooled in the UK either (the above info is what I picked up from my mum who is a teacher!).
  • It is legal, as I was home schooled for year 11. I left on religious grounds (BIG mistake!), and the local education authorities didn't seem too bothered. Once you're out of the system though, you need to pay to take GCSE's which at the time were £60 - £100 a paper. Needless to say, many kids 'leave' with no qualifications and few prospects.
  • It's definitely legal in the UK. It's not always kids being excluded from school either, I think that's just a mainstream view. People can't understand why others choose home schooling. There is a strong movement of religious homeschooling in the UK not just christian or muslim but other forms of religion where parents are concerned with helping their children down what they feel is the right path. Other reasons for homeschooling include disliking the lowest common denominator effect of state schools, having a large family and wanting to work and live together as a unit, living too far from a good school or just being a free thinker. The majority of the homeschooling families i know do so because of the last two reasons.
