  • wrong category BTW. It's probably a prevention method cause he's getting older. Tell him to give you a prescription and then get it offline at one of the online places.. Canada has good prices on it. You can also get them OTC but be careful with the dosages. I met a couple who bought OTC meds for their puppy and ODd it and it died. So be careful. YOu can usually get it at places online much cheaper..VETS are out to make money. If he really needs it tell the vet to give you a rx where you can get it cheaper. If he gives it to you you know he cares about the pet and not just making a $.
  • Larger dogs are prone to joint disease, hip or elbow dysplasia. I have 2 now that i sometimes have tohelp stand. And its not easy trying to pick up the back end of a German Shepard. If your dogs dont show any symptoms yet, then you should get them started on it. Ask him if the Walmart stuff will do. The research is still out on long term benefits, i think, but its 5 or 10 at walmsrt , and my GSD would think it would be welllllll worht it.
  • There are many non-prescription herbal preventatives for this available at Pets-mart. They are cheaper. I think natural meds. are just as good as prescription. My catahoula had parvo as a pup. I made her better with Gatorade and Pedia-lite. She is still doing well today.
  • Remember, your dog will have suffered for a long time by the time he show symptoms. Glucosamine is for arthritis and is an OTC supplement. The price your vet quoted seems high. My friend used it on her dog...he was so bad he couldn't go up and down steps but with the supplement, he could. She got hers over the counter at Walgreens. http://www.walgreens.com/search/search_results.jsp?term=glucosamine You can research pet formulas too... http://www.discountpetmedicines.com/buysupplements/glucosamine-multiple-source.htm Good luck.
  • I'm pretty sure you can buy MSM + Glucosamine for a lot less than that. You could also look for a product called Adizone, which is an organic alternative that was designed to treat join pains, inflammation and arthritis in dogs. We use it on some of our dogs, when they've hurt their legs, or are limping, and on one of our older dogs, and it's very effective.
  • Yup! You are being played, and you should come right out and ask for something cheaper like people do for their generics and alternative formularies.
  • You don't need a prescription for that so save your money, shop around and get it cheaper, just be sure you buy a good quality product. But I would be aware that as they age, larger dogs have joint problems and it can only benefit him. What might be even better is if you got him off of commercial dog food and fed him raw bones and meat instead. Then he would be getting the kinds of calcium and nutrients his body really needs. We have had Newfoundlands for years and most of them have loved to be 12-13 years old and they have never had many of the bone and muscle problems like so many large dogs get. Most of the time we've fed bones and raw food.
  • Natural food stores have it cheaper...get on the internet and do some research....both to understand why and to price check...
