Yes. Sometimes after a couple of comments your views or feelings may have changed. Also other people tend to join a comments thread and place their answers within it.

For some, it's a nice safe place to post what they really think without the risk of being downrated.

We can earn points from questions, answers and moderation. I think that's more than enough. I know there are lots of comments that are much better than the answers themselves, but we must always remember that comment threads are there precisely because we want to clarify some things. Comments should therefore be used for that purpose, and not for gaining points.
