How do I stop myself from being just a number?

You're a number and you're not a number. At the same time. So there's no point in fighting the former, it comes with being one of 6 billion people on the planet. I'm just another head in the crowd, another statistic, another number -- from the 10,000 foot objective level. From the subjective level -- and perhaps to a few close others -- I'm a whole world.. the center of a universe that is distinct and unique. It's MY world: mine to be responsible for, mine to appreciate, mine to contribute to. So it's about being able to go back and forth between those two perspectives without having to choose one or the other and say "this one is correct". They're both correct, from their own viewpoint.

Maybe you could make a world of difference to even just one other person. Maybe join a big brother/big sister program. Take someone not-so-fortunate under your wing. To the world you might still be just a number, but to that person you could be a hero!
