Dogs get most of their information from smell. By sniffing butts - both human and canine - they can tell if the person or dog is male or female and I think what they have been eating. They can also tell if the dog has been fixed or is receptive to breeding. Now I never seen any of our cats sniffing butts, but could be for the same reasons.

In addition to sifong's answer - my two cats sniff each others butts if they get the opportunity (but neither of them like to be on the receiving end of the sniff!). I think they also get the same information as dogs do. Cats have an even stronger sense of smell than dogs (they just are not so easily trainable).

Their parents didn't teach them any better. Face it - if your a good looking woman then I am contemplating sniffing yours - see whether your in heat or taken - get a sense of what it is you like to eat - what your hygiene is like. True I would rather get a visual gander at you before sniffing your butt - still though, the crotch sniff would be a nice pre homebase exercise.
