Electric or gas? You can operate electric stoves which are stripped down or rusted to the frames without a problem as long as all the electrical insulation on the wiring is intact; however, if the stove is gas you need to make sure all vents, gas lines, fittings, burners, inlets and outlets are in good shape to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning or potential gas leaks. Since most of the gas inlets are made of non-corrosive materials, gas intrusion into the living spaces is rare, but keep your nose sharp. If it is a gas stove and you smell a 'rotten eggs' smell -- cut the gas OFF to the stove at the main line leading to stove and get a professional repair done.
