A friend bought a DVD player with a five year extended warranty. Six months later it broke down and was replaced by a new one. But three months on from that, it broke down. She was then told that the new DVD player was not covered by the warranty. WTF?

Most manufacturer's cover the item for a year. Even if the new one was a replacement, as long as she has the receipt that proves when she bought it, she may be covered. Extra warranties from third parties tend to have a lot of fine print -- go over the five year warranty print. You/she may be right, and the people just don't want to deal with it. If you have enough support for your argument, it weighs a lot more than just saying, "but I thought I was covered".

Take it back to the store they bought it at, maybe they will give a store credit.

It wouldn't surprise me that there exists language in fine print to that effect in the contract/warranty. Just one of a # of reasons why they *suck*! ;-)
