Most manufacturer's cover the item for a year. Even if the new one was a replacement, as long as she has the receipt that proves when she bought it, she may be covered. Extra warranties from third parties tend to have a lot of fine print -- go over the five year warranty print. You/she may be right, and the people just don't want to deal with it. If you have enough support for your argument, it weighs a lot more than just saying, "but I thought I was covered".

Take it back to the store they bought it at, maybe they will give a store credit.

It wouldn't surprise me that there exists language in fine print to that effect in the contract/warranty. Just one of a # of reasons why they *suck*! ;-)
