  • What is under the marble? If it is concrete then I would advise against wood flooring even with a so called vapor barrier laid onto of concrete. Most of the hardwood flooring issues I have seen in newer houses is that hardwood was laid on a concrete slab. If you have wood or man made wood only, then you should rip out the marble and the grout and adhesive, sand down the underlayment and lay in hardwood or that fake wood laminate stuff that passes as hardwood flooring now days. Concrete on wood will crack, sooner than later. In any case the best idea is to remove the marble and its attending cement work. If it has been laid down right (which is to say wrong) then it may come up easily enough to where you can sell it as 'recycled' material. there is a pretty penny to be had in some marbles, recycled and otherwise. And too older ceramic tiles, especially those from the mid 1950's and earlier.
