  • You don't. Office rumors start because its all fun and games. The rumor continues because lets face it juicy gossip is much better than truth. These are co-workers - not your friends. You do not need them, and obviously they feel they do not need you, except to make the butt end of the office joke.
  • There's really nothing you can do other than buckle down and do your work. Don't engage folks when you hear the banter. Keep your nose clean, and all should be fine. Bottom line is, there will always be people in the workplace that will find someone to pick on, wether what they have to say or their opinion is right or not. As long as you work hard and keep free from engaging in the rumor mill yourself things will be ok. Just a thought though, have you mentioned any of this to your boss? If all this is not true and the rumors are really too much to handle, you may be looking at workplace bullying, in which case, your boss has a duty to make sure it stops, even if he's one of the accused in the rumor mill.
  • You could always tell them you broke it off. In "admiting" that you were together you, ironically, set them up to believe that the whole thing is over.
  • I was just accused of flirting with one of my co-workers husband the other day. Little did she know, he's my cousin. The person went back and shared this information with my cousins wife, but she doesn't know I know this. I happen to be a friendly person, and women are quick to assume more especially when you're talking to a man. If this is your personality, and you're attractive, you are undoubtedly going to preyed upon. But, don't change who you are to distract their attention. They're waiting for you to do something out of character to prove this affair. And their watching him as well. Don't purposefully avoid your boss. This will only confirm to them it's true and the rumor will continue, or, get worse. I would tell your boss immediately, because they're causing an unsettling work environment. In most companies, this is grounds for dismissal without question. I wish you all the luck.
