Instead of entirely prohibiting non-iPods from access to iTunes, why doesn't iTunes double the downloading fee for their media onto non-iPod portable media players? Wouldn't the idea earn Apple even more revenue from this service?

Well, I think what iTunes is trying to do is make more people buy iPods. That's the entire idea. They're gonna make it hell for you until you buy their product.
