I think some of the characters in a midsummer nights dream are happy.

Of course not. Look at the times for which Shakespear wrote and the people for which he wrote. Wretched times and wretched people, existing in terrible conditions. What sort of message would happy cheracters send? He had to write about wretched, lost souls who should have been happy, but were alway betrayed by close allies, relatives, or cruel fate. People who always longed for more than they could ever attain, or expect to attain.
