The belly-button is a scar caused by the removal of the umbilical cord after birth. Whether an innie or an outie is determined during the healing process and is random, however, innies greatly outnumber outies.

The amount of subcutaneous fat around the navel (as fat accumulates around it, the umbilicus seems to go deeper and deeper). Outies are usually seen in thin people, unless there's an umbilical hernia.
