Piece of paper, folded down to a size so the thing ( like a table) won't shake anymore.

There is fiberglass putty now available that can fill any gap now. After allowing a few minutes for it to set the surface can be filed to give it the same old smooth finish. Then the use of a little paint and it will look as if the gap never existed. Before the fiberglass putty came we used to use the ordinary putty. Somewhat messy to work with and it took a day to set. But the similar results could be obtained.
