...the omega point (or something like that)... duhn Duhn DUUHH! Who knows? Isn't information different than knowledge though I read somewhere just this morning where somebody said, "Meta-data is the new petroleum".

I heard last spring about something of a digital revolution in Italy bc they were trying to cut off people's access to freely disseminated information on the WWW. Since I still chat with friends in Italy, I think that is a good sign that the time you imagine will come some day. Although it is important to remember that developing nations still would likely not share the same degree of access.
