I recently learned that the northern border of Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma follow the 37th parallel rather than the natural geographic figures. Apparently this was decided back in the day by the politicians in Washington who didn't really know about the landscape.

Traditional borders based own territory owned or gained through victories in war tend to have too many nicks and corners and curves. Straight lines as borders are the most convenient and uncontroversial. No border town can ask themselves to be merged with their richer neighbor. Straight line borders usually occur in newer countries or states with no inhibitions of language, culture etc. They also occur when a colonial ruler awards independence to a territory by splitting it into several countries as per the needs of the hour. This is not to say this works in all cases. Lord Mountbatten had a very difficult time in determining the borders of India and Pakistan. School going children love straight borders. It makes it easy for kids in schools to draw their maps without much trouble!
