If the objective of terrorist was to get the US out of the Middle East, wouldn't it better serve their purpose if they aided in development of alternate fuels - oil being the main objective of presence? (Or is their true intent just mayhem?)

Think of this like that. Imagine that they were the developed ones and they suppressed us like we are suppressing them. One day you wake up took shower and got dressed to go to grocery you leave your kids and family at home...after you come back you see that your house have been burned down with artillery fire or F20 bombardment. How would you feel? i dont know where you are living but if any country invaded mine i would fight until i die. regardless the religion, race or purpose. US invaded them just for the oil and killed many civilian do you think US brought peace and prosperity to them? then think again...

They just hate the U.S. It's born and bred in them. The U.S. just needs to get energy independent and let them fight each other all they want so we can stay out of it.
