The Trimurti is the major conceptual grouping of the Indian gods within Hinduism. It took awhile to come into being. There are hundreds and thousands of gods in Hinduism, and local forms of particular gods became popular in different regions. Some of these divine figures merged into other deities, and over a long period of time we see certain pan-indic gods becoming popular all over the subcontinent - like Shiva and Vishnu for example. In the Trimurti Brahma is the creator god, Vishnu the sustainer of life, and Shiva the god of destruction. Brahma wasn't a particularly popular god in India though, and although he is in the Trimurti, he only has one or two temples dedicated to him in India, while Vishnu and Shiva have hundreds of shrines and temples dotted all over the country. Note: Brahma is the creator god in the Trimurti. Brahman is the philosophical term for god used in advaita vedanta.
