I'm buying a used car (my first). What things should i get checked by either someone i know or by a mechanic? (ex. should i get the transmission and engine checked?)

Pay a mechanic to go over the car. He can check the mechanical components, listen for some problems, and plug into the car's computer to check other trouble spots. I paid my guy $65 to do it, and never regretted the cost.

Engine, trans, suspension, wiring...take it to a garage for a check up..cost between 80 and 100 dollars, they can put it on a machine and give it a look..worth the cost. :)
