Have you tried imagery rehearsal therapy? It is very helpful!

Depending on the content of your dream it could be any of the following: 1. A long unresolved conflict that you have been "stuck" on for too long. 2. An unconscious fear created by either your own personal experience or an existential condition (i.e., something we all fear and need to work out during the life cycle). 3. You're repeatedly having nightmares from something like a poor environment to be sleeping in--one in which you are getting disturbed while in the first stage of the sleep cycle (the stage you are most likely to dream in). 4. You may be having what's called "night terror," which is a sleep disorder that involves having a dream during a deep stage of sleep and then you suddenly wake up disoriented from it. This is very rare and I'm not sure it's even treatable. Before you get all kinds of advice, remember that Freud once said sometimes a dream is just a dream. When you say the dream occurs "repeatedly" it may not be a sign of an internal conflict because if you go to sleep expecting the dream you could be priming yourself for it. After the first couple of times you may have been so frightened by the dream that now you've conditioned yourself to think about it before you go to sleep. I can think of one thing that could help you break this kind of habit: Read something that interests you before you go to sleep. Then again, there is the traditional understanding of dreams having a special "meaning," and it's not without some debate among psychologists. Personally, I think it's very tough to tell when a bad dream is just a dream and not something like the result of an internal conflict, especially if it repeats. I have dreams that repeat but I wouldn't call them "nightmares." These dreams contain content that is a part of the events in my past that were stress related. The events are over but because I experienced being somewhat of a "victim" to the events my mind can't let go of the past that left a deeper imprint. I find it's helpful to remind myself that these dreams are nothing else but my mind trying to work through what can't be done: relive the past. You must accept that the past can't be changed, but remember this: Even though you can't change the past you can change your memory of it. You can reappraise what happened to you in order to live more free of the past. Another thing you can do is keep a diary about your dreams. Don't just describe them. Explain to yourself what the dream means so that if your unconsciously trying to work something out you can make those thoughts more conscious rather than having the same repetitive dream. If you already have enough insight to know what your dreaming over and over about, then I think it's obvious you need to actually do something about whatever it is your troubled about.

I'm sorry it's horrible, Martina. I've had two recurring "dreams" for as long as I can remember..nothing I can do to stop 'em. One is that I am trying to get ready to leave the house..work/school/an appointment, I don't know. And I cannot get out of the house..something keeps going wrong. The second one..I'm in a strange place surrounded by strange people and I'm trying to get home but I seem to be invisible because everyone ignores me. So I wish you luck in finding out the cause of yours and ridding yourself of it. Then if that happens, please let me know how you did it! :)
