I haven't used amyl nitrate but once when I was somewhere it is legal. But way back in my wild days, I used a lot of butyl nitrate. It never lost its kick for me. YMMV

Perhaps using it rarely will increase the effects in a single use. I used to have a friend that could get it up and cum anywhere from 2 to 4 times a visit(his record was 6). Over 8 years of occasional play I can remember once or twice I had to tell him, "No more for me, I am poppered out."

From my experience: it works in any case. But I use it rarely, but than I have the impression that it is more intensiv as if I use it at one evening more often. I really don't know - and nobody at AB could give me a plausible answer - why poppers are so popular in the gay scene. It's not illegal in Germany, you can get it in all gay sex shops.
