  • Drama is intended for public performance. eg Henry V by Shakespeare was written for performance on a public stage and is not really meant to be read from the text in any manner. Poetry is intended for public oration. eg Daffodils by Wordsworth is meant to be read aloud to an audience or one's self; it is not meant to be read mentally (without being spoken aloud) though it most often is. Novels and short stories are intended for private reading to one's self. eg 1984 by George Orwell is meant to be read mentally, though it can also be read as if it were poetry. There are, of course, many works which blend, invert, or distort these manners for some literary effect, but the essence is as stated.
