  • People, usually men, try to take on this role to get some acclamation and praise. This doesn't necessarily mean they have low self-esteem, but rather they may feel underappreciated or undeserving. They may also want you to feel like you couldn't or wouldn't make it without them to fix things for you. Try to let these people know you like them for them, not for what they do.
  • Funny thing, one of my workmates and I were talking about somebody we know doing just this very thing. He's a good person but apparently doesn't think so much of himself so is the white knight rescuing damsels in distress. Trouble is, at a certain stage, they decide he's too good for them and they don't deserve him so they leave.
  • Well Jung would think it is just their anima or persona breaking through that they are the protector and fulfilling that male belief-set. Freud would believe it is the Ego coming into play to protect the "inferior" sex (oh Freud). The answer though. I have no idea.
