The vagina is not open all the time, it is actually what you call a potential space. As you become sexually aroused it balloons and enlongates slightly.
The easiest way to describe it is like a fire hose
that when not in use lays flat closed you know the material type ones that are used on fire trucks that are rolled out. Once the water is turned on they open and fill with water.
The vagina works much the same way, when your not aroused it lays closed and this is natures way of protecting it, the same as women depending on the time of the month may have clearish or whiteish discharge sometimes, this is another way of keeping it clean.
As you get older if you don't do kegel exercises you will lose muscle tone in your lower tummy abdominal area and some women will suffer bladder incontinence due to it.

When you are not using it.It stays closed.In other words,when you are not having sex,it's closed.
