  • I have a subscription to the English theatre season in my hometown. They usually have one or two Shakespeare plays a season. Whether it works depends on how it's put on. Some people worship Shakespeare as a God. Others recognize he's just a writer who occasionally throws in dirty jokes. A million years ago, I was in high school, and the teacher played us a recording of Shakespeare so we could hear how it flows. The section he played included a dirty joke. I laughed. And I was the only person in the class who laughed. The teacher yelled out my name in a disapproving way. I can't help but think that some people take Shakespeare way too seriously, forgetting that he was just a guy, writing plays, trying to make a living. If he tells a dirty joke, you're supposed to laugh -- not ponder the wisdom of his genius.
  • Fortunately, I did not *have to* read it at school. And yes, I could stay awake to read it!
  • Would rather be hit over the head with a hammer. No, really, just do not care for his works much. I love Tolstoy, Dickens, and most of the rest of the classics but always had trouble with Shakespeare. I also never was exposed to much. When we had to read one of his plays in school the teacher in whose class I was in was a bad teacher so maybe I never really gave Shakespeare a chance. This teacher was the worst English teacher I ever had.
