  • Good idea to defrag - unlike other operating systems, the Microsoft Windows Vista filesystem, NTFS, suffers badly from fragmentation. The defrag process in Vista does now run automatically, so you shouldn't need to manually run it.
  • Vista defrag runs in the background, but its slow and lacks a graphic interface like the Windows XP defragmenter. If you are looking for a third party tool, my suggestion would be Diskeeper08, it defrags silently in the background without eating system resources. The defrag is fast and efficient even if the free space is less than 15%.
