In Christianity it's phrased slightly different. It's the predestination vs. free will debate. If you swing to far to either side, you leave the other out...thus falling into a paradox as big as the time continumn in Star Trek. I believe there is a mix between the two - a balance. We are all destined to do that what we are, but in order to get there, we make choices that eventually lead us to that point. Theologians LOVE to argue this...and within about 15 minutes of hearing them argue, I usually plug my ears, curl up in the fetal postion on the ground, and wish I was in my happy place.
