Cable internet is generally faster, check to see availability in your area. I personally have cable and a cell phone, no house phone.

Yes, this can be done: I did it. The main problem is that I wanted to keep my old phone number, so I used Vonage's service in which they move your phone number over to the VOIP circuit. It turned out that this left me without my original number for about a month: I still had VOIP service, but it took a month to get my original phone number hooked up as a VOIP line. If you don't need to keep the original number, this isn't a concern. The Vonage line works great, btw -- it has a lot of cool features, like being able to ring my cell phone and landline simultaneously, etc.

Keeping DSL until I move this month (where I'm getting cable) is a must. I thought the number transfer to VOIP would be pretty seamless and quick, but a month without that number would not be good. Maybe another VOIP provider is quicker? I was thinking that the number could be ported without my DSL going down, but I'm dealing with Verizon :(
