  • As a rule of thumb, I'd say 34, since 32 is the freezing temp. If you let it go that low thou you're threading on thin water
  • Pipes burst when the water in them freezes and expands the pipes. If you are not going to be in the house, it's best to turn the water off.
  • It depends on how long and what your water pressure is. Water under pressure freezes at a lower temperature. Normally, if the low is going to be 32F, you're ok. Anything under that you better take precautions like insulating your pies, letting the water drip, etc.
  • The inside of your house does not have to be freezing for your pipes to freeze. If your pipes are above ground and the temp outside hits below freezing, your pipes will freeze. It can be 70 IN your house while the inside of your walls and under your sink cabinet can be freezing (32F). You can do a number of thing to prevent pipes from freezing: where visible, wrap them in insulation; leave open cabinet doors under sinks... those things will help. If you have a SAFE small heater, you can open the cab doors and let the small heater blow into area.
