Smoking from??? Lets say from the engine compartment or from under the car - this means oil has been spilled on the engine or the muffler pipe/exhaust pipes. In this case after a while driving it will burn off. If smoke is coming out of the tail pipe, then we need to discuss color. White means (usually) water or antifreeze has gotten in the cylinder(s) and the engine it trying to burn it - this is mostly steam and should not be confused with cool weather steam - watch other cars go by, if white is coming out it is steam. Blue smoke means you are burning engine oil - oil is getting into the cylinder(s). In either case only a drop can cause this effect - and it may not be anything major and may stop on its own. If it continues of course see a mechanic. Black smoke from the tail pipe means excess fuel. for gasoline cars this means something is wrong with the carburetor, its running 'rich' meaning more gasoline than air is getting in. The gasoline is not being burned completely thus is coming out half or partially burnt (black sooty, particulate smoke)
