New development in active optics have meant that earth based telescopes can produce pictures nearly as good as Hubble's. The active optics dynamically tweak the mirror to compensate for atmospheric distortion. But they cannot see light that has got absorbed by the atmosphere. So the JWT will be exploring new areas of spectrum rather than taking slightly better pictures of known areas. Expect the unexpected.
