Just bought a new Dell laptop (Inspiron 1525). I tried to hook it up to my cable modem, and I can't get DHCP to assign an IP number. I know the modem is working, because I plugged it back into the old computer and it's fine. Am I doing something wrong?

Go to run, type in cmd or command it'll bring up DOS in there type ipconfig and press enter it'll tell you if your conputer has an ip assigned or not, and it'll tell you what it is. If you have none i think you can type iprefresh and it'll probly assign one, not 100% sure but i know it wont fuck your computer up if it doesnt work.

Dr_Dread, I have recently had the same problem. Go and download the free driver for your device. Look up your device name in the Driver Folder in the Control Panel. Then copy and paste that driver name into google and add the words "free download for" and then your pasted driver name. Download and run the driver. This should get your internet working.

Here is what you can do... Get someone elses cpu and a flash drive and get the information from that cpu. Plug the flash into yours and get the driver off of the flash drive. Hows that?

If have to assign the IP address, goto network connection then goto TC/IP then goto Properties and assign the IP Address.
