I can think of ignorance (not knowing) paying off but stupidity? Can't think of a situation in which being stupid would be a good thing. :) If you are ignorant (unaware) of insider trading, for example, you're off the hook..if you are ignorant of "cooking" the books, you are uninvolved. But if you are simply stupid you could bumble your way into something big/bad/awful and end up holding the bag and being blamed. :)

The Thesis of Dr. Laurence J. Peter and Raymond Hull's 1968 book, The Peter Principle, states, "In a hierarchy every employee tends to rise to his level of incompetence." It is actually a humorous and once wildly popular book about the "salutary science of Hierarchiology", "inadvertently founded" by Peter. Despite the humor, there are many careful, credible, and thought-provoking observations in the book. It holds that in a hierarchy, members are promoted so long as they work competently. Sooner or later they are promoted to a position at which they are no longer competent (their "level of incompetence"), and there they remain. Peter's Corollary states that "in time, every post tends to be occupied by an employee who is incompetent to carry out his duties" and adds that "work is accomplished by those employees who have not yet reached their level of incompetence".

I work with a few that put on an act that they cannot do a certain task, so those tasks get pawned off on other people. I guess that's a way stupidity pays off in the workplace, although I rather people knew I was smart!
-
In life - in general - stupidity and/or laziness pay off when people realize that someone can't be depended on and they start taking over that person's duties because if they rely on them, they will go either undone or will be screwed up

When your boss gives you an insurmountable amount of things to do, and tells you "this has to be done", "that has to be done," etc., and you act "dumb" and go "Oh, okay, sure," each time, and "Oh really? Okay," and you get away with putting things off so you can catch up! Lol.

When your boss or co-worker asks "So what have people been saying about me?" It's probabaly better to act dumb like you haven't heard anything. It's a no-win situation if you tell the truth. 1. If you tell them you'll give the impression that you're gossipy. 2. The next question might be, why didn't you say anything?
