  • One major function is to produce chemical energy (ATP) for the cell. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitochondria
  • Mitochondria, in simple terms, is the power house of the cell.
  • the mitochondria houses 2 of the 3 metabolic pathways in a cell. the first is glycolysis that takes place in they cytoplasm of the cell where glucose is broken down through a series of steps into pyruvic acid. the 2 pyruvic acids are then taken into the mitochondria where krebs cycle (citric acid cycle) will creat ATP, NADH and FADH2. the NADH and FADH then carry an electron to the electron transport chain which is located on the cristea (inner membrane) of the mitochondria. the electron is passed down a chain of protiens which uses energy to pump H+ from the matrix into the intermembrane space. this leads to chemeosmosis, which involves the H+ going back into the matrix through the ATP synthase, where ADP is phosphorylated to ATP. (this is where most of the ATP is created) Krebs cycle and chemeosmosis/electron transport chain both occur in the mitochondria. So the purpose of the mitochondria is to supply ATP, which is energy that can be used for multiple purposes throughout the body.
  • Mitochondria aka powerhouse of the cell, the mitochondria provide the location for the production of ATP. ATP is produced by glycolosis, the Krebs cycle and electron transport. ATP in turn provides energy for the cell at the molecular level. ATP (adenosine tri-phosphate).
  • It generates lots of ATP for the cell, which is then used for all active processes in the cell.
  • power house of cell
  • mitochondria is the powe house which generates ATP-very important for energy- found in sperm cells- large numbers because sperm cells need to swim towards ovum and other cells as well which need energy and move.
  • This is the powerhouse of the cell. This is where cellular respiration takes place and energy is released
  • The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell. It provides all of the energy for the cell (ATP).
  • Powerhouse of the cell! makes ATP's. Krebs cycle takes place in the matrix.
  • it is the breathing of the cell... it gives oxygen to let the cell breathe ^^ it works by the command of the nucleus in the eukaryotic cells...
  • another use is Mitocondrial DNA.... passed on through the the mother only. help in solving a few crimes when they are out of options
  • Makes the oxidizing reaction to produce energy for the cell :- See thus link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitochondrion See thus image http://scienceblogs.com/worldsfair/Mitochondria.jpg
