Most historians believe that the Civil War didnt end with General Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Reconstruction in the eyes of many caused an outburst of violance mainly directed towards African-Americans and their sympathizers. After the Civil War African-Americans were allowed to vote this did not go well with most Southerners especially recent white slave owners. Although African-Americans were free there was still many ways whites kept them from voting (Black Codes) as well as the Grandfather Clause, not to mention the forming of Americas first terrorist group the Ku Klux Klan. which began as a fraternity group but later resulted in the prosecution of blacks and its soaring membership led to many more deaths for blacks. In my opinion i would say it was a failure but President Johnson's neglect and protection of blacks was also a reason for the allowable upheavle of violance towards them.
