I reccommend freshwater first. Marine tanks have all sorts of complications that could turn you off to tropical fishes for life! - extreme sensitivity of invertebrates to conditions - ultra sensitivity of live corals - wild-caught fishes are ethically a concern - everything costs more for marine - salt creep is a sticky, crusty nuisance - special foods - special chemicals - limited aquarist support at stores - larger tank volume required for bio-stability - different lighting needs - special gravel or live sand required Freshwater is MUCH easier, and not unrewarding. Browse a few stores, especially an aquarium specialty if you can find one. Some excellent ones are online. Drs Foster-Smith has an aquarium line, besides other pet supplies. Check around, and learn about the types of fishes you want to keep. Ask staff for suggestions, and knowledgeable people will help. Avoid the uninformed, or unsure. Better to get a library book to check, than to buy incompatible fishes. Enjoy your new hobby.

Salt water tanks are hard to up keep. You constantly have to be testing the water, pH levels etc. I agree with what was said above!

In my experience of about 5 years in aqua life I’ve come to find out any thing is easy to do if you know what you need to know. You say you never had a fish tank? Well I say hit the books. And hit a lot of them. If your heart is set on saltwater, then all I can say is get it up and running with live rock/sand and let it sit there for a hand full of months while practicing proper maintenance and lighting options, and reading everything you can on livestock and how to introduce them to the take, and most importantly if there compatible to your water parameter and with each other. A simple rule is Corals 1st invertebrates 2nd, fish last, and the more aggressive the fish and later your introduce. But man there’s is a lot involved in saltwater. It’s a very procrastinating hobby that takes time, a lot of patients, and research. But I kind of do this for a living so if you want e-mail me at awf1011@hotmail.com and I can help you out a lot more at no charge!! I just need a detailed list of what you have, filters, take size, etc.
