I would hope so! I don't even think being unionized could prevent it.

Yes. Whether you are late by 10 seconds, one minute or seven minutes it is all the same - late is late.

Being late shows that you have little respect for other peoples time. It is rude and disruptive.

Yes. If you are scheduled to be there at a certain time and you are consistently late, you can cost the company money, put undue stress on other employees, show the employer that you can't be trusted, fail to comply with company policy...

Yes. It is better to be early for work that late. You will get a good reputation with the bosses this way and maybe a promotion some day as long as your other work habits are good.

In the vast majority of states, employment is "at-will," meaning that you can be fired for any reason, or no reason at all (there are a few exceptions, the most obvious ones being laws against racial discrimination in employment).

Go through your employee handbook. I bet one of the first things it says is that your employment is at-will.

One who comes 5 min late should be punished to go home 10 min later than others. And I think being late constantly is a problem.

i remember my receptionist was always late. once, i spoke with her because her tardiness made a couple of sheriff's deputies sit in the parking lot 45 minutes. not kosher!!! she cried to my wife who in turn yelled at me. so, maybe someone can be fired, but the practical ramifications can be chilling!!!

    Not necessarily.

it would depend on the warnings and the amount of damage you cause. Strictly speaking you should probably have at least three warnings before dismissal is used.

For how long were you employed?

Yes. One place that I worked for will fire you if you are 30 seconds late enough times.

I quit because I got a better job and they were a lousy place to work for.

yes, if you are 5 minutes late then it is your own fault and is saying to your employer that you dont really care about being on time because if you did then you would try to be there at 8:45 instead of rushing for 9:00. If you try to get there at 8:45 and are 5 minutes late then guess what, you are still early!

Yes they can. If the employee is serious about wanting to keep their job, they would be there on time. I think they should be given a warning first -- everyone deserves a chance to redeem themselves.

That depends on a lot of things, such as how vital is her timekeeping to the job (is the person in direct customer service or a pen pusher at the back) and how tolerant the firm is (are other employees doing the same thing?). Also, how well does the person perform in other aspects of the job.
I have seen people kept in spite of constant tardiness because they had excellent skills that the company did not want to lose.

it depends on the state laws and the bylaws of the place you work, but yes in most cases you can be fired for absolutely no reason at all, all that protects you is the bylaws of your company. So definitely a big yes you can be fired for being late 5-7 min.

I think that if they fire you for being 5 mins late that is a place that you didn't need to work in the first place!!! That shows that they don't value you as an employee....most places give you a leeway of 5 mins before and 5 mins after your shift is suppose to start but, if they wont to be nasty about it unfortunately in most states they do have the right to get rid of you.

Probably ~ depending on the job.
I was thinking about this very thing this morning while driving to work ... late (again). I'm lucky my job is flexible and I dont take breaks so they know they're on to a good thing regardless of me being late. I've occasionally apologised and offered an explanation - no explanation required :)

If it's on a continuous basis then yes you can. It also depends on your circumstances and if you've told your supervisor behind your lateness, they might try and work with you.
