Last night my sister said she reckoned it was as much as 50% of the people in the world, I told her she was nuts and it was probably more like 20%... would welcome other people's thoughts and/or concrete knowledge.

t is estimated that approximately ten percent of the U.S. population or 25 million people are homosexual. http://adoption.about.com/od/gaylesbian/f/howmany.htm
-
They say that at least 10% of the worlds population are homosexual. Since in so many countries and Religions homosexuality is not even admitted to exist. I would imagine that the 10% is an underestimate.

Any meaningful studies or large-scale surveys on the subject would tend to disagree with a lot of the wild guesses posted here. For a start there are still many countries in the world where homosexulaity is illegal. In Western countries, and particularly cities like London, New York, Brighton, San Francisco, Amsterdam, the incidence will be much higher than other areas. Ecven so, the gay vote in New York is measured at about 8 per cent. In nationwide surveys of Canada, US and UK, the incidence in surveys of over 10,000 people was rarely higher than a couple of per cent for lesbianism and about 3.5-4 per cent for gay guys. I think people just say 10 per cent because people like round numbers! When the surveys added 'those who had had sexual encounters with the same sex once or more than once, or people who consider themselves b--sexual, it rose to around 4-5 per cent for women and 8-9 per cent for men. I think the 10 per cent figure may include bisexuals and transgender but even that is being hugely generous. GLB AND transgender communities are still small minorities compared to the huge numbers of straight people in a given population at large. Large Pride festivals often distort the picture in people's eyes. Of course in many areas even of the more tolerant, nicer countries, the gay and les scene is tiny or virtually non-existent. Just how many people in a population are bi-curious is unknown and of course, open to debate. Thank you

10 percent of the world's population is 350 million people. That is a little bit less than the entire population of the United States. I don't think I would go that far. Maybe, MAYBE 5 percent but I would think it would be a lot less of the world's population. But it is ever growing and I don't think the number will ever go down.
-
From all real estimates it is 2 or 3 percent. Many gay activist groups want people to believe it is one in 10 people, but it is not nearly that high unless 75% of the gay population is still hiding in the closet.
-
I would estimate it at no less than 10%, because when you think about it, it's very likely that a large majority of homosexual people are not open, due to society's common rejection of gay practices. Thus, it could be anywhere from 10-25%, we just don't know. The openly gay population is very low, probably about 5%. I don't think the number of actual gays is increasing, just the ones who are open about it, because society is becoming more accepting of it.

It's a silly question in one way - though it is fair to ask. If you strictly want to count "out" individuals... well I don't know. Maybe 10%. But many countries forbid homosexuality, and therefore entire nations are "closeted" - or certain citizens in denial in fear of persecution.

TOO MANY definitions Str8,bi,Gay,Bi-curious,Hetro... When I was growing up it was said that 1 in 10 people were gay.... That was in the early 60s, Pre Metro sexuals, so... Who knows...Who cares? WHY are we so concurened...? It imply's Something is wrong with people who arn't conforming to the norm I think prehaps we should stop the prejudice lables. The only 100% CERTIANTY... EVERYBODY is SEXUAL!

It is impossible to answer that because we live in such a close minded society and world that most homosexuals are scared to be open about it. How do you know who is and who isn't if it has to be such a secret?
-
I'd say 5%. I believe homosexuals are born so genetics plays a major role. But here's the surprise. If homosexuals are going to be parents by surrogate means - sperm banks, etc., can genetics then be influenced to bring more homosexuals into the world?

A NY TIMES poll found only %3 of the population to be homosexual. The %10 figure comes from a survey done in the 1940s called "The Kinsey Report". Dr.Kinsey used some outdated research methods. It is interesting that people in our "progressive" time are relying on 60 year old data to support their views of homosexuality. No modern survey conducted in a scientific manner gets results higher than 4 or 5 percent. Read up on the inconstancies of the Kinsey Report on google the "family research Institute" has a very readable online outline of some of its problems. http://www.familyresearchinst.org/FRI_AIM_Talk.html

A NEWLY RELEASED REPORT from the Centers for Disease Control’s National Center for Health Statistics reveals that only 2.3% of the population considers themselves homosexual. The statistics come from a 2002 National Survey of Family Growth and are based on 12,571 interviews with men and women ages 15-44 years of age. (The findings were reported in WorldNetDaily, September 16, 2005). According to this survey, only 2.3% of the males surveyed considered themselves to be homosexuals; 1.8% considered themselves to be bisexuals. Among men ages 18-44, 92% said they were attracted “only to females” and 3.9% “mostly” to females. Among women, 86% said they were attracted only to males, and 10% “mostly” to males.

Right, this is my theory: Most people assert the percentage would probably be around the 10% of the population, but that is referred to homosexual people. What about bi-sexual ones?? Here's the thing: In ancient societies such as Greek and Roman (but it's just because ive studied western civilization only, and I heard it was the same in asian societies) basically every male was bi-sexual, to the exent that they would go with women for reproduction and with men for leisure. Now if homosexuality is genetic, or at least genetic only, should we think there was some kinda epidemic spreading at that time?? I think this shows everyone is potentially born bi-sexual, but after the advent of the Chuch homosexuality has been steadly repressed. That is why nowadays most people would be freakd out by the idea of an intercourse with a samesex-individual. So I think, virtually, everybody can be bi-sexual at different levels, with people being much more than other ones, who are those who are considered homosexual nowadays, cuz social repression couldn't suppress it.

Actually, only 1% of the human populace is 100% gay or 100% straight, so that means that the other 99% (the rest of us, yes all of you too) is somewhere in the middle, either leaning toward gay or straight. I think because it is not accepted in our society the way we would like it to be, many people remain in the closet for fear of ill treatment or strict lifelong religious views teaching that the so-called "Choice" (which isn't actually a choice) is immoral. Anyway, there you have it. 1% gay, 1% straight. The rest of us are to some degree, bisexual!
-
1.51% of the total U.S. population identifies themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual, or 4.3 total million Americans. These numbers are based on figures provided by a broad-based coalition of gay rights organizations and homosexual advocacy groups. The primary source cited was the The National Health and Social Life Survey (NHSLS), published in the book The Social Organization of Sex: Sexual Practices in the United States (1994), by Laumann, Gagnon, Michael and Michaels.

Prince said we are all switch hitters to some degree. I think humans are still animalistic and will have the urge to penetrate/be stroked with whatever satisfies. Man, woman, animal, toys, water, self, etc. Too many mind controls have been imposed on humans by the powers that be to ever get a realistic survey.

The earlier reference is correct. Kinsey's study was based upon interviews with a great number of prisoners, and he admitted to having a large number of male prostitutes in his sample, as well. These were easily available, or "captive" subjects. Even at that,Kinsey didn't estimate %10 in the overall population, but only about %4. Consistently, across nations, the actual figures of less than %1 to 2.5% homosexual is found to be accurate from well conducted, scientific studies. %10 is grossly absurd and inaccurate.
