movies are encoded in a certain way and only the right decoder can decode it so it can be played. A codec is an encoder-decoder. Perhaps you have to update to the latest version of windows media player and activex, I do use another player divx (www.divx.com) and I find it more updated.

In addition to the previous response, multiple codecs are often bundled in packs, to give you a better chance of being able to play any given file. Try a Google search for 'codec packs' - examples include the Gspot pack and Matroska pack. Once installed on your PC the media player of your choice will use these filters to decode and display your file of choice. Visit the Microsoft site for the Windows Media Player codec pack which will help in your case, or try the VLC player from VideoLAN which has plenty built in and is less of a beast than Win MP.

This message is supposed to tell you that, you should get yourself new Video Codecs Pack, the current one sucks. I recommend CCCP. (http://www.cccp-project.net/)
