  • Technically people have been wearing undergarments since the loincloth. They wore them to keep their genitalia from getting in the way and to deal with perspiration. Some were worn because of modesty, as even men with long caftan or tunic garment wore them to be modest like when going up stairs so they would remain dignified, for instance the Bible speaks of the Levite Priests as wearing undergarments while serving at the temple. That was about 4,ooo years ago. Before that Egyptians wore them as well, both men and women. The Romans were a little looser people. The men sometimes wore them, not the women, and all slaves more them.
  • For guys, underwear makes us look cool. They provide a way to show our junk w/o frightening innocent women and children. For women, underwear are necessary to keep their private stuff from falling out. Before underwear, you might be walking along, minding your own business, and suddenly you slip on a uterus, or get a tube wrapped around your leg, or you run into a girl crying, "Help! I lost my ovary! It fell out when I took a leak, and now I can't find it! My husband will kill me!" <waahhh>
  • I heard an interview on the radio the other day about the history of bras, which are apparently, and I quote, "an amazing feat of engineering". So maybe that aspect was to keep engineers employed.
