  • Yes they do. They're now an investigative arm of the Texas Department of Public Safety. The concept, not the organization, goes back as far as 1713 when the greatest threat to the Spanish colonists was Indians and an French interlopers. Basicly, The "compania volante" or flying squadron was an answer to Spains inability to man and maintain presidios in the "frontera". Important point: Up to and for a time after the establishment of the Republic the members were mostly Tejano, that is, people of Mexican heritage born in Texas, not anglos.
