The best is to use a combination of letters, numbers and/or special characters. Avoid dictionary words and have different passwords for various sites. Save a few for internal use (at home/office) and use others for external (WWW-)sites. Don't tell anyone your system in case you have one to make you remember a bunch of passwords.

Would you also like my bank account number, a copy of my driver's license and my Social Security number?

I use combinations of letters and numbers that have nothing to do with my personal life. A lot of ppl use their kids names, pets names, po box #'s and this would be so easy for someone who knows them well to figure out.

For none sensitive stuff like my emails and websites I use mostly the same common passwords. However, for online banking, brokerage, investments, store (Buy.com, Amazon, Nestegg) accounts I use different passwords which always include random numbers and hard to guess words/proper nouns with nothing being a favorite of mine like a minor character's name from a book I once read or a Japanese song title, etc.

Try this password strength checker at Microsoft. http://www.microsoft.com/protect/yourself/password/checker.mspx There is a p/w generator built into Windows. Open a CMD window and type: net user administrator /random It will generate a random, high-strength p/w.

I have developed a system using street names and numbers. For instance, most of my E-mail accounts have a password that is the house number and street name of the house I grew up on. I also use the phone number that I grew up with for some things.
