It's a good idea to trim their nails. Cats who are outdoors a lot do a lot of scratching on trees, etc., which dulls the nails. Indoor cats can use regular trims to reduce the violence their claws exert on furniture and people. Pet stores have the trimmers.

I think de-clawing is cruel too. Cat's aren't for our amusement. Ask your neighbour how she would feel if you cut off her tongue because her it was more convenient for you not to have to listen to her anymore?

Cats that are always indoors can grow claws so long that they double back on themselves in a complete circle and start to cut into the paw. THOSE need trimming. As soon as your cat is physically unable to completely retract the claw then the nail is beginning to be a nuisance for the cat - imagine him/her being unable to unhook from a sweatshirt or the like - going to jump off a lap and ending up hanging. However - cats who can retract their claws well enough, have the points on them for many good reasons, and one of them is for telling neighbours they don't like 'don't mess with the kitty'. In that case, leave them exactly as they are!

Before I had my cats I had Genie Pigs. There claws grow much faster than a cats and it can really kill them with wounds to the feet. (Sorry paws) I trim my cat nails once a week. Even a trimmed claw can cut a person. They can retract the nails fully. They are just skittish. They are both alley cats I took in. So while they trust me, Strangers are anther story. How ever I didn't know a cats claw could grow that way. Thank you for the info. I will stay diligent in there care. They mean the world to me to be honest.

Very true Hasntbeen and Tareesh. I feel if you take a pet in, you have to accept the whole package. And not surgically alter them to fit your whims. Animals or pets are not play things. Me-Me and Cloud are apart of my family. I would no more ask a sibling to alter them selves then I would my cats. Thank you. Also I have to trim my nails so I am treating them as equals.

I think it isn't any of your neighbours business to tell you what to do with your cats. Obviously she is not a cat fan. Declawing is unnecessary and cruel. If she knew anything about cats she would know that. If you enjoy her visits from now on put the cat in a room and shut the door to keep it away from visitor.

Tell her that you will most certainly NOT de-claw your pets, and never to come over again!!!!!!
