How do I stop myself building my hopes up each year for something I am not going to get?

Don't even concern yourself with it. I seriously don't think too much about what I'm going to get for Christmas so I care very little.

My Father never told me he loved me until just before he died last year. Try not to worry about things that may never happen . I am always told if you give off negative vibes they attract the bad stuff to you. I am pretty sure that is not true but people with a cheerful out look do seem to have an easier ride in life because of the positive attitude

BAM, if this is about your dad, you've gotta move on. Which is extremely difficult I know, just tell yourself you don't want a jerk to love you and surround yourself with other people who love you. Geez, you've only got to come on AB to do that!

Give him a hug at every tiem you can and tell him you love him at every time you get the chance. Maybe he will tell you some day but I think you will feel better just giving him affection. Say your prayers and you just may get what you want.
