Good question....I would have said that first something would have to at least appear believable, but clearly in the case of religion that’s just not so. In fact with Christian based religions in particular the more unbelievable something is the more they believe it. Weird or what? Most religious would call this faith, where as the rest of us would call it deliberate ignorance.

The need to believe lies in the nature of our minds which tends to wander. The mind needs an anchor or must be tied to a buoy to keep it from wandering without direction. A firm belief serves the purpose.
